Orchid Day - Saturday 13th May 2017

Orchid Day at Clyst St Mary

Orchids are often perceived as being difficult to look after but we are all charmed by their wondrous looks. At our Orchid Day at Clyst St Mary, we will help solve your orchid growth problems as we’ll as give you top expert tips for ongoing success.

What happens on Orchid Day?

Dr Manos Kanellos, an expert on orchids from Growth Technology, will be on hand to help you with helpful tips and plant ‘health checks’ so do bring your orchid(s) along. The event will take place at our Sidmouth Road, Clyst St Mary garden centre on Saturday 13th May.

Does your orchid look tired? Does it need repotting? Do you want to know how best to look after it? All your questions will be answered.

Manos will be providing two talks during the day on the topics of orchid care and re-potting. In between talks, you will get the chance to have your orchid re-potted by Manos.

Timings for talks

We like to keep the talk informal so visitors can drop in and listen to as much or as little as they like. Seating will be provided but is limited. In previous orchid days we have found these talks to be incredibly popular so why not grab a take away coffee or tea from our cafe and get your seat early?
The talks will be at 11:00-11:40 and 14:00-14:40.

The Orchid Clinic will run between  approx 10.30 and 4.00pm (except 1-1.30 and during talks).

Repotting £2 or free when you buy an orchid pot and Orchid Focus Repotting Mix.

National Cream Tea Day

Celebrate National Cream Day this Friday 30th June.

Both our garden centre cafes serve delicious cream teas throughout the year and today at our 1925 Kitchen (Sidmouth Road, Clyst St Mary, EX5 1AE) you can enjoy a fruit or plain scone, served with clotted cream and fruit preserve along with either tea or coffee for only £4.25

The history of the cream tea

The exact origin of “cream tea” is disputed but there is evidence suggesting that the tradition of eating bread with cream and jam already existed at Tavistock Abbey in the 11th century.

The Duchess of Bedford made afternoon tea fashionable in the late 1700’s/early 1800’s. Tiring of the long wait between lunch and dinner she would order tea and treats to her room when peckish. This soon evolved into full on gowns-and-all social affair, inviting friends to join her in her country house.

By the middle of the 19th century, afternoon tea was an every day occurrence; a spread of sandwiches, cakes, scones cream and jam – the first hint of cream teas as we know them today.

Cream tea

The cream tea tradition definitely began in the Westcountry. With Brunel building the railway it opened up the tourism market and visitors would travel to the south as they do today. Tea rooms everywhere offering delicious afternoon cream teas, made with the finest local ingredients, like ours today. Always served with strawberry jam and clotted cream.

The Cornwall Devon divide

Cream then jam, or jam then cream? It’s the difference between the Cornish and the Devonshire cream tea and the cause of much controversy. Of course we are devonshire so we highly recommend you place the cream first and then the jam. After all, with toast you wouldn’t put the butter on after the jam would you?

However you take your cream tea, enjoy National Cream Tea Day.

Vintage Tea Dance

We are celebrating the official launch of our 1925 Kitchen at Clyst St Mary with an afternoon Vintage Tea Dance.

Why 1925?

St Bridget Nurseries was founded by the late Frank & Hilda Langdon in 1925. This year the company moves on to the fourth generation (Frank & Hilda’s great granddaughter,Tammy Falloon) who is taking on the role of Managing Director from her mother, Janet Flinn, in September. We therefore thought it was a good theme for a party.

The event

On Sunday 27th August we will be welcoming the delightful Liberty Sisters to our Clyst St Mary garden centre. We will be clearing our existing garden furniture showroom and creating a dance floor surrounded by chairs and tables so you can enjoy a little Lindy Hopping in between lunch and afternoon tea.

Who are the Liberty Sisters?

The Liberty Sisters are Dolly, Ruby and Rose from Devon, UK.

Come and hear the delightful Liberty Sisters sing a selection of songs form the 20s to 50s. Come and hear the delightful vintage harmony trio

They share a life-long passion for harmony singing – especially vintage music. When you hear them sing, you can’t help but tap your feet, sway and smile and maybe even singalong! Here’s a beautiful example of their varied portfolio, take a listen

They will be joined by their travelling stage/tour vehicle ‘Buttercup’.

Who should come along?

Anyone. Bring the family to our vintage tea dance. The music is fantastic and children will enjoy dancing as much as reminiscing ninety year olds! We even have a dog section on our cafe courtyard (free biscuit for dogs)!

Delicious food and drinks available

Our usual menu and pricing will apply, come and join us for Sunday lunch followed by afternoon tea.

Are there any offers?

This will be the last weekend of our summer sale so there will be plenty of seasonal savings in store.
